SWEDESBORO, N.J. - That’s going to leave a mark, Santa.
The HEADstrong Lacrosse Club of South Jersey recently hosted a “Rip it @ Santa” lacrosse fundraiser on Dec. 27 at Locke Avenue Park in Swedesboro in support of Colin Wiederholt. Wiederholt, a 5-year-old from Mullica Hill, N.J., who was recently diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.
Local boys and girls from Kingsway, Clearview, Woodstown and St. Augustine Prep made every shot count as they ripped balls at Santa. Players were asked to donate $1 for every ball shot, and the HEADstrong Foundation was able to raise $3,000 to help defray some of Wiederholt’s medical expenses.
Michael Colleluori is unfortunately all too familiar with a story like Wiederholt’s. When he was in college, Colleluori saw his brother, Nick, battle non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma before ultimately passing away from the disease. Nick’s fight led to the birth of the HEADstrong Foundation, which works every day to improve the lives of those affected by cancer.
“At HEADstrong Lacrosse, we have a responsibility to not only develop great lacrosse players, but more importantly teach them more than the game,” Colleluori said. “This was a great opportunity for our families to rally around Colin in hopes to help ease their financial burden of medical expenses and to assure them that they are not alone in their fight, because no one fights alone.”
The HEADstrong Foundation wishes to thank the Kingsway Youth Lacrosse Program, Swedesboro-Woolwich Parks and Recreation and all of the participants. Without them, the event would not have been possible, and the indelible impact that the event had on the Wiederholt family would not have been felt.
